Emma Hotel Proposal
While most of my surprise proposals at the Pearl have taken place on Pearl Springs Island, this is by no means the only place where you can get down on one knee. With historical architecture and access to the Riverwalk in abundance, your options are myriad. In today’s blog post I’ll explore one such option, an Emma Hotel proposal. The Emma Hotel is the architectural anchor to the Pearl and whether you decide to propose outside or inside the hotel, I’ve got all the details that will get your beloved to say ‘yes.’
Planning the Proposal
The historic Pearl is a location I know all too well for photo shoots. I’m there, usually photographing a surprise proposal, at least once a week. So, when Bobby contacted me to propose to his girlfriend Kate, I naturally assumed he was headed towards the Pearl Springs Island – my location of choice for proposals at the Pearl. Much to my surprise, however, Bobby wanted to literally flip the perspective and instead propose with a view of the hotel.
Bobby met his girlfriend Kate through work in 2022. They fell in love after many dates at the at the Sternewirth Bar, so of course the Emma Hotel is a place that is near and dear to their hearts. They have memories strewn all across the Pearl and it was important to Bobby to have the Emma Hotel in the background of his proposal.
Challenges of This Proposal Location
Crowds
Wisely, Bobby scheduled his proposal for a Thursday afternoon. This cut down on foot traffic during the time of his proposal. However, if you’re familiar with this area, then you will know that this is quite a popular thoroughfare. I cannot recommend this location on the weekends. Indeed, we lucked out and there was no one on the sidewalk when Bobby proposed to Kate. I dare say this would be an impossible feat on a Saturday or Sunday.
Inclement Weather
As with all locations at the Pearl, you will be at the mercy of the rain gods if you choose to propose outdoors. We’ve been going through quite a bit of rain lately here in San Antonio. There are a few places to hide at the Pearl (check out this article on rain backup locations at the Pearl), however, this proposal spot is very much out in the open.
Camera Logistics
If your goal is to get the entire hotel building in the frame, then note where you need to propose versus where your photographer needs to stand.
On the day of the proposal, I played the part of a bird watcher/nature photographer, and was standing on the pathway which connects the island to the main patio along the Riverwalk. Bobby and Kate came down the Isleta parking lot stairs and walked past me on the sidewalk. When Bobby got to the pathway on the left leading down from the auditorium, he proposed to Kate. This gave him enough room to propose, but also allowed my wide angle lens enough room to be capture the entire building.
For all of you camera nerds out there, I always shoot with two camera bodies at the same time, both of which are Canon 5D Mark IVs. I have one camera outfitted with a Canon L-series 24–70mm lens which was sufficient to capture the entire building. The other camera was outfitted with a 70–200mm lens which took close-ups of the couple during the proposal. This way I could capture two perspectives of the proposal and not have to waste time switching lenses.

Engagement Photos at the Pearl: Reenacting Bobby and Kate’s First Date
You can see how happy Kate was following the proposal. She was completely surprised. It was a beautiful moment, and after giving the couple a few minutes to themselves, we then proceeded to take engagement photos around the Pearl.
I started off with photos along the railing, right where Bobby had proposed to Kate. I made sure to capture more images of the hotel in the background. We also got some fun shots of the omnipresent ducks, who at this point are quite tame and have such personality.
Our next stop was the wooden bench across the river, located just under the main bridge. This is the bench where Bobby and Kate shared their first kiss, so of course we had to take photos here.
Next up, I concentrated on taking some fun photos of the engagement ring in the little pathway beside the Riverwalk between the main bridge and the second bridge. This pathway is usually somewhat private.
The Emma Hotel – Private Property
We ended our photo shoot at Sternewirth Bar. Here’s where things get tricky. The Emma hotel is private property. To take photos inside a private building, you must have permission ahead of time, especially in the case where there are other guests milling about who no doubt do not want to be photographed.
In my experience working at the Emma Hotel, the hotel staff has always been kind and accommodating if you need to take a photo here or there. However, staging a full engagement shoot and using full flash, which would disturb other guests, would absolutely get me kicked out of the bar.
With limited lighting capabilities, you should note that the Sternewirth Bar is extremely dark inside. My recommendation is that if you’re going to take a few photos, then limit yourself to a private corner outside. In Bobby and Kate‘s case, they had always had dates inside the bar so they wanted photos in the hotel.
Emma Hotel Photo Policies
If you do wish to take photos inside the Emma Hotel, contact the public relations department and ask if they can make accommodations for a small photo shoot or if a photo permit can be purchased. Officially, the hotel only allows professional photography if a contracted wedding is taking place at the hotel. One other option is to rent a suite at the hotel and use the suite for your proposal. You would then be free to take photos inside your suite.
