Boerne Engagement Photos: Tips for Your Hill Country Photo Shoot
If you’re looking to take a road trip for your engagement photo shoot, then the city of Boerne might be the perfect destination. With a precious little main street, a gorgeous riverside park, and a downtown plaza chalk full of charm, Boerne has it all. In today’s blog post I’ll share with you, Natalie and Austin’s Boerne engagement photos that will have you leaving the city of San Antonio behind for a quick 45-minute trip north. Trust me, it’s worth the trip.
Boerne Engagement Photo Shoot – An Overview
While your engagement shoot may encompass one or all three of these venues, note that all three are within walking distance of one another: River Road Park, Main Street, and the Main Plaza. You can take in more or less of whichever area you choose, but during Natalie and Austin’s photo shoot, we were able to take photos in all three areas during our 90-minute photo session.
Boerne Engagement Photos – River Road Park
The first area is River Road Park, located along its namesake, River Road. The park is a 250-foot pedestrian boardwalk running along Cibolo Creek. Marked by beautiful weeping willow trees, the park has benches, a metal bridge to walk across and a cute little duck statue.
My recommendation is that you take advantage of the city’s free parking lot located on Plant Avenue and start your photo shoot at the corner of Plant Avenue and River Road. From this starting point you can walk along the river and get to the bridge at Main Street. Note also there is a free restroom at Plant Avenue if you need to change clothes.
During my photo shoot with Natalie and Austin, the creek water level was quite low. If you’re feeling adventurous, then by all means crawl underneath the bridge for some reflective shots with what water is left in the creek.
Boerne Engagement Photos – Main Street
The town of Boerne goes all out when it comes to decorating Main Street. So, depending upon what holiday you are currently celebrating, plan to see the light post and shops decorated accordingly. For Natalie and Austin’s photo shoot, it was hard to escape Christmas.
That said, we were able to take advantage of some reflective windows, and some street atmosphere. The shops are quaint and cute. In addition, you have little niches here and there where you can duck in and take unexpected photos.
Case in point, we were able to find a driveway that had abundant landscaping as well as interesting stone work. With no one there to kick us off the property, we snapped a few photos and then moved on to the Main Plaza.
Boerne Engagement Photos – Main Plaza
The Main Plaza is the quintessential meeting spot for this small town. As you might’ve guessed, it was dressed to the nines for Christmas. While we avoided shots with Christmas trees so that Natalie and Austin’s engagement shoot wasn’t too seasonal, we did take advantage of the trees wrapped in string lights.
One thing you can’t miss in the town square is a photo with Wild Bill Hickok. He is Boerne’s unofficial town mascot, even though there is no known connection between the historical figure and the city of Boerne. Still, a few funny photos with him just had to be shot.

A word of caution: the Main Plaza is host to ‘Market Days,’ a very active farmer’s market on the second Saturday and Sunday of every month. I would avoid a photo shoot in the area during this time.
Meet Natalie and Austin
I am so glad I met Natalie and Austin. These two found me on Reddit, as everyone seems to now. They have been together as a couple three years, and met through friends of Natalie’s ex-boyfriend. Austin proposed to Natalie on Coronado Beach in San Diego, but the ring didn’t actually arrive until right before our photo shoot. Natalie’s engagement ring was designed by the couple together through the company Diamonds Direct.
Best of all, I’ll be able to tell their love story full circle when I photograph their wedding in March! Stay tuned, as I’ll be photographing Natalie‘s bridal portraits in February at the San Antonio Botanical Gardens. Then in March, I’ll be photographing their beautiful ceremony at the San Antonio Botanical Gardens followed by a reception at the Guenther House. So many great things planned with this couple, and I am thrilled to be a part of every exciting moment.
Final Thoughts
The town of Boerne is relatively relaxed when it comes to photo shoots. In my research for Natalie and Austin’s engagement session, did not find any photo permit information. As always, River Road Park and the Main Plaza are public spaces, so having respect for others takes top priority. Rules such as not leaving glitter or fake rose petals behind should always apply.
Other than that, Boerne is a beautiful location which I think more people should visit. At just 45 minutes away from San Antonio, the city offers easy parking and plenty of beautiful options for photo shoots of all types. For those of you looking to get out of San Antonio, Boerne makes it easy for you and your photographer.
Enjoy the images, and I’ll have more photo adventures for you next week!
