St. Joseph Catholic Church Honey Creek Wedding
High up on a hill, located between Austin and San Antonio in Spring Branch, is St. Joseph Catholic Church Honey Creek. This church overlooks a spectacular Hill Country landscape and has a history that is equally remarkable. I recently had the pleasure of photographing Nadia and Tristan’s St. Joseph Catholic Church Honey Creek wedding photos and I am pleased to share every moment of the ceremony with you in today’s blog post. So, get ready to climb: we are headed to the hills of Texas.
Meet Nadia and Tristan
First, let’s meet the couple, Nadia and Tristan. These two are true high school sweethearts. They met in middle school at the age of 14, and started dating in high school. The proposal took place in Central Park in New York on January 27th of this year. Although the day began as just a walk in the city, it eventually led to Central Park. Tristan had a plan, and he brought Nadia to one of the main ponds in the park where he proposed. What a small world that would lead these two Texans back to a New York photographer!
St. Joseph Catholic Church Honey Creek Wedding – Bride and Groom Portraits
You definitely can feel that you are in the Hill Country at St. Joseph’s as the views from the church parking lot alone are impressive. Naturally, I took full advantage of this beautiful scenery during the bride and groom portraits. To begin, we started off with a first look by the rock chapel overlooking both the current sanctuary and the historical chapel. I concentrated all of our photos in this area primarily because of the amazing scenery, but also because it granted the couple and myself complete privacy from guests. With ample time to spare, we headed down the hill in time for the ceremony to begin.
St. Joseph Catholic Church Honey Creek Wedding – The Ceremony
The ceremony itself was a classic Catholic ritual with full mass and flowers to the Virgin. There were two readings. The respective grandmothers of Nadia and Tristan presented the couple with a Bible and a rosary. After the ceremony, we took family portraits at the altar, followed by more photos of the bride and groom in the church’s smaller chapel which has beautiful stained glass windows and an exquisite altar.
The Big Kiss
Nadia and Tristan mastered the big kiss in the aisle after just one practice session. This is a trend that I hope continues with couples. All too often the first kiss at the altar is just not that photogenic. The couple is nervous and you end up mashing your lips together. However, waiting until you have your moment in the aisle for a big dip gives you the chance to really own your time in front of the camera. Case in point, Tristan’s elegant dip of Nadia.
The History of St. Joseph Catholic Church Honey Creek
Finally, I will leave you with a bit of the church’s interesting history. St. Joseph Catholic Church at Honey Creek was founded on August 20, 1876 with the dedication of a log chapel. After it burned down, a small rock chapel was built in 1878, and the original cemetery from that time remains today. In 1892, a frame church was constructed at the current site, followed by a stone chapel on the hill in 1904. The present historic church building was completed in 1913 and later served as a school run by the Sisters of the Incarnate Word until 1949. In response to parish growth, a new church building was constructed in 2002. Today, the parish includes over a thousand families and continues to thrive.
