A Central Park Family Portrait Session
I have photos from the cutest Central Park family portrait session to share with you today! Rob and Sara’s family and I go way back — back to when they only had one baby. As time progressed, I have had the pleasure of photographing each family addition. In today’s blog post, I’ll share photos from our time in Central Park. So, let’s get the band back together again, so to speak, and have some fun.
Rob & Sara: A History of Our Fun Photo Shoots
Rob is a very smart man. He has nailed the Mother’s Day gift to his wife, Sara, every year with a family portrait session. It’s the perfect gift of memories, and — hint, hint — I offer gift certificates in case there are any fathers out there are wondering what to give your wife next year.
Our first session in 2018 started off along the Hudson River waterfront. This was when they only had one hatchling. My favorite photo from the session has always fit this photo of their daughter trying to go rogue and crawling towards the camera.
On our next outing, we headed over to Brooklyn Bridge Park. This is when I met the second addition to the family. We also had Sara‘s mother with us that year for the photo shoot.
Central Park Family Portrait Session – Planning the Photo Shoot
This year was no less fun in Central Park. While the family has moved around over the years, their love for New York City has remained strong. Although they now reside a little farther north of NYC, they wanted to commemorate their love for the city they once called home.
The family was staying on the Upper West Side during their visit to the city. As such, it was an easy choice to decide to enter the park together at 85th Street and Central Park West.
I have had the pleasure of photographing Megan and Jon’s family in this very location, so I knew this part of Central Park well. For any diehard New Yorkers looking to avoid the crowds, this is a great spot for photos in Central Park. Because you are north of 72nd Street, you instantly cut down on the tourist traffic normally found south of Bethesda Terrace. There is also a playground, which can serve is a great motivator for the little ones. Best of all, this section of the park has beautiful natural features in this section of the park, including Summit Rock and the Arthur Ross Pinetum.
Central Park was crazy crowded that day. However, this section of the park makes it easy to have it appear as though you have the space all to yourself. There are lots of nooks and crannies among the trees and rocks, so that you have a blank background.
Central Park Family Portrait Session – Order of Photos
As with all my Central Park family portrait sessions, I started by focusing on the kids alone. I photographed each child individually, and then in cute combinations. The next step was to bring in the parents. Finally, because this was my first time meeting the newest addition to the family, I took extra time to focus on the littlest one.
The last of our photos involved embracing the chaos, that is New York City. We had some crosswalk shots, a few blur shots with taxis, car passed, and finally it was time for a snack.
Sara and Rob are always up for some fun, so of course we had to end the shoot with a visit to the ice cream truck. It was a true NYC moment with the little ones covered in ice cream on the sidewalk.
Enjoy the images, and I’ll have more photo adventures for you next week!
