Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing Paige and her family of 13. That’s a lot of people to pack into one photo, and truth be told, there aren’t a lot of places in downtown San Antonio with enough blank background to accommodate such a large group. So, what is the best location for group photos in downtown San Antonio? The answer: Hemisfair Park. This beautifully designed urban oasis provides a variety of backdrops that work well for both large and small groups, making it my top pick for family and group photography sessions.

Top Locations in Hemisfair Park for Group Photos

Entrance at E. Nueva and S. Alamo Street

I always like to start my photo sessions with a bit of walking, just to get the nervous energy out. This is great way to begin the shoot to get the entire family involved and walking down the tree-lined pathway for a very picturesque photo. Bear in mind, with the current state of construction, you will have to do a fair amount of Photoshop clean up in the background, but it is worth it. One more word of caution: this is a busy pathway with traffic, so always be aware of oncoming cars and keep an eye on younger family members.

Play Tourist in Front of the Tower of the Americas

No visit to Hemisfair Park is complete without incorporating the iconic Tower of the Americas into your photos. For the best angle, I recommend shooting from the ground up. This not only emphasizes the grand scale of the tower but also helps eliminate other visitors from cluttering the background. A well-placed group can frame the tower beautifully while still keeping the focus on the family.

Best Blank Background: The Grassy Embankment Behind the Pond

When entering Civic Park at Hemisfair, one of the best places to get a simple, clean background is the grassy embankment behind the pond. The key is to climb up the embankment on the far right-hand side, as it is much easier for those with mobility issues. This area provides a soft green backdrop without distractions, making it ideal for large group portraits where the focus should remain on the subjects.

Large Grassy Area

At the far end of the park, near the restroom facilities, there’s a spacious grassy area that works well for larger groups. This location provides ample room to arrange family members in a variety of formations while still maintaining an open and airy look. This is also a great area if you need to let little ones run around a bit to let off energy.

The Exterior Patio Next to the Mexican Cultural Institute

This patio offers a unique setting with its interesting statues, though it can be quite dark depending on the time of day. If shooting here, make sure to bring extra lighting or plan your session when natural light is at its best. The warm tones of the walls create a beautiful contrast, adding depth and texture to your shots.

For some added fun photos, don’t forget to hit the playground at Yanaguana Garden. You have lots of options here, from the vintage gondolas to the mosaic animals and playground equipment. The playground is always, ALWAYS packed with kids, so you will have to wait your turn for the perfect photo. (And probably have to Photoshop out a kid or two.) Still, it’s worth it for the perfect group shot.

Best Spots for Smaller Groups

For smaller groups, I highly recommend using the areas near the water features in Civic Park at Hemisfair. As you enter the park, directly to the left, you’ll find a quieter section that is typically less crowded. A row of bushes and foliage separates this area from the central walkway, which helps hide the passing traffic from your shots. Additionally, the water features provide interesting reflections that add an artistic touch to your photos.

Navigating Hemisfair Park for a Smooth Photo Shoot

Hemisfair Park is located in the heart of downtown San Antonio, so keep these factors in mind when planning your shoot:

Check for Events: Always check the Hemisfair Park website before scheduling your shoot. The park frequently hosts events, and a busy festival could make your shoot chaotic. Also, do not even think of scheduling a session here during Fiesta—trust me, it’s an absolute madhouse.
Weekend Crowds and Parking Woes: Weekends can be especially crowded, making it difficult to find quiet spots for photography. If possible, opt for a weekday shoot when the park is less busy.
Best Parking Spot: Personally, I recommend parking in the Alamo lot directly behind the Magik Theatre. This lot offers hourly rates and is one of the more convenient options in the area.
Ongoing Construction: Hemisfair Park is an evolving space, with ongoing construction that can impact accessibility. Be prepared for some detours and plan accordingly.

If you’d like to expand your photo shoot beyond Hemisfair Park, consider these nearby locations:

Yanaguana Garden: For some added fun photos, don’t forget to hit the playground at Yanaguana Garden. Just be mindful of the crowds, construction, and event schedules, and you’ll walk away with impressive images every time.
