Downtown San Antonio Surprise Proposal
If you’ve been avoiding downtown San Antonio because of construction and parking, then this blog post might change your mind. In today’s article, I’ll take you behind the scenes of Pablo’s downtown San Antonio surprise proposal to Michelle. We start off at the Weston Centre waterfall, then take a stroll down the River Walk, and finally end up all the way at the Alamo for a complete tour of the city’s top sights. Lots of great photos with no construction barriers anywhere.
Meet Michelle and Pablo
Technically, you can call Michelle and Pablo high school sweethearts. They met nine years ago online, the summer before their senior year in high school.
Planning the Proposal
The couple frequents the downtown area for dates, so it made sense to use the city as the backdrop for their photo shoot. When Pablo contacted me, I immediately thought about the Weston Centre waterfall. Pablo was loathe to get anywhere near the touristy side of the River Walk, but I assured him that this end of the River Walk was far away from the chaos that is found near Rivercenter.
For the proposal, Pablo had a grand plan. He put his mother and two sisters to work laying out a beautiful setting. Faux candles were lit, and a heart was assembled with real rose petals. All of this had quite an impact when viewed from the top level.
The Logistics of Proposing at the Weston Centre
It should be noted that the Weston Centre is technically private property. While I have tried to contact the Weston Centre to find out if the building requires a permit for the use of the space, no one has ever returned my email. With no rules in sight on the outdoor grounds (nor any security guards), several surprise proposals take place here every week. This, of course, does not mean that our presence is technically permitted.
My only suggestion for other photographers is that you pick up after yourself and remove any rose petals or props after your proposal. Note that Pablo’s mother and sister remained behind after their proposal to clean up all of the petals.
Pablo’s Surprise Proposal to Michelle
Michelle was truly overwhelmed when she saw the heart as she descended the stairs. She began to cry when she saw Pablo get down on one knee. Yes, it was worth the nine-year wait. The moment was truly heartwarming, and you could tell it was an emotional milestone for the entire family.

Downtown San Antonio Engagement Portrait Session
River Walk
With the proposal under their belt, it was time to launch into their engagement portrait session. This stretch of the River Walk is not only less congested, but it is also beautifully landscaped. As you can tell from these photos of Michelle and Pablo, it’s almost as if we were transported to a botanical garden.
Houston Street Intersection
Our next stop was to pop up on Houston Street. I’m a big fan of mixing up backgrounds in a photo shoot. I believe that going from nature to an urban-focused background gives a portrait session more variety and dimension. In the case of Michelle and Pablo, I wanted to take photos in the crosswalk and capture the ‘big city’ feel of downtown San Antonio.
Majestic Theatre and Antique Architecture
And while you’re in San Antonio, you of course have to take photos in front of the Majestic Theatre. This iconic marquee is a must for any downtown San Antonio shot list.
Michelle is a fan of all things antique, and San Antonio has that in spades. I made a point of taking advantage of every antique architectural element I could find, including the columns of the Gunter Hotel as seen here.

We took some colorful shots in Peacock Alley, before lounging a bit on the steps of the Houston Street post office. This beautiful federal building is one of my favorite photo shoot locations in the city. Just check out how it served as a background for Jacqueline‘s senior portraits here.
We ended our photo shoot at the Menger Hotel and in front of the Alamo. The intricate wrought-iron columns surrounding the hotel and the wrapped lights around the trees in front of the Alamo are some of my favorite photos from this session.
Final Thoughts
While construction will not be ending in downtown San Antonio anytime soon, as seen by these photos you can easily keep the barriers out of mind and out of sight during your photo shoot. During my Weston Centre to the Alamo, taking photos all along the way. There was no need to worry about traffic as we were pedestrians.
And believe it or not, there is plenty of parking in downtown, it’s just a matter of knowing where to find it. Most people try to park in central downtown, and the truth is you should stick to the outskirts. You’re much more likely to find easily available street parking if you stay off the beaten path. That’s just my perspective as a downtown resident.
Enjoy the images, and as always, I’ll have more photo adventures for you next week!
