Austin Newborn Portrait Session
With all that’s been going on in the news lately, I think it’s time to simply stop, take a breath and appreciate some cute baby pictures. So, let’s meditate on photos from a recent Austin newborn portrait session. In today’s blog post I’ll be sharing all the images along with a few tips for your own at-home newborn shoot to ensure that both baby and parents alike are all smiles.
Meet Mirko and Kaila
Mirko and Kaila welcomed their son into the world in November, and I was honored to be selected for his first photo shoot. As a designer, Mirko had a vision for the session that included a photo of his little one ‘swinging’ on a wooden swing for his birth announcement card. There were three outfits planned, and of course, also a photo in front of the Christmas tree.
In addition to photos of the family, Mirko and Kaila also wanted to use their photo session to showcase the renovation of the kitchen, which Mirko had personally supervised.
Planning the Session – Home is the Best Location
Scheduling the session at Mirko and Kaila’s home was an easy choice. For newborn portrait sessions, I always feel that a client’s home is the best location. This is the place where the family feels the most comfortable.
Furthermore, this is where all of the items you will need are easily at hand (diapers, wipes, bottle, etc.). Why have to bring everything with you for your first photo shoot? Take the stress off yourself and schedule your newborn portrait session at home where you can relax.

The Outfits
Kaila and Mirko had three adorable outfits planned for their beautiful, baby boy: a little lumberjack set, mini hedgefund outfit, and a Christmas-themed onesie. We did end up changing their little cherub into all three outfits simply because he needed changing, but in general, I recommend selecting two outfits at the most.
Newborns are loathe to change, and changing clothes can wreck a baby’s mood. I do recommend that you have backup outfits at the ready in case of emergency situations, but know that the more you tug at a baby the less congenial your model will be in front of the camera. Trust me.
Be Prepared to Pivot
Newborn photo shoots rarely go according to plan. And that’s perfectly fine. Plan to get what photos you can and then plan to schedule another photo shoot in the future. Your little one may be in a great mood one moment, and then…not. That’s just how it is.
The key is patience. With newborn portrait sessions, you will spend a lot of time waiting for your little one to settle back down to sleep or feeding. That’s totally par for the course. These very real moments are wonderful opportunities for photos, so do not shy away from the camera. Changing your baby’s diaper, giving a bottle, or quieting a little temper – these are all moments to be cherished. Smiling for the camera is just one side of a portrait in my opinion.
Enjoy the images, and I will have more photo adventures for you next week!
