City Hall Wedding Portrait Locations

Wedding Garden sign for an article on City Hall wedding portrait locations

If you are going to tie the knot down at City Hall, the reality is you don’t have a lot of obvious options for portraits in the area. Just walking into the Marriage Bureau office, you’ll notice you are surrounded by construction and scaffolding. While you do have locations such as the Little Wedding Garden, Foley Square, the Brooklyn Bridge, and even Chinatown, which spot is best?  In today’s blog I assess all of your City Hall wedding portrait locations and let you know the pros and cons of each option from a photographer’s perspective.

A Modern Take on Tradition at City Hall

A City Hall wedding photographed by NYC wedding photojournalist, Kelly Williams

As promised, I am so happy to share with you photos from Aadhya and Aarav’s wedding on Monday!  These two met eight years ago while both were volunteering in India.  And though Aadhya eventually moved to Ethiopia and Aarav moved to the UK, love couldn’t keep them apart.  Their friendship turned romantic, and Prashant finally asked for her hand in marriage the old fashioned way — over WhatsApp.

A NYC City Hall Wedding: Helen & Grant

Love is in bloom at the Manhattan Marriage Bureau! Helen and Grant celebrated their wedding yesterday at City Hall, and I was honored to photograph them. The weather, while threatening to rain earlier that morning, turned out to be glorious. In addition to shooting at City Hall, we also shot a few pics at the Robert J. Wagner park next to Battery Park. Congrats, Helen and Grant!  #HelenAndGrant2014

Jace and Michael’s NYC City Hall Wedding Photos

NYC City Hall wedding photos by NYC wedding photojournalist, Kelly Williams

I am so pleased to introduce you all to Jace and Michael — whose wedding I recently shot at NYC’s City Hall. This transgender couple met in 1997 while on a bus to school when Jace was Jennifer.  Michael chased Jace for ten years off and on before Jace finally gave in and said ‘yes.’  The proposal took place while sitting at the bar at Tia Pol Restaurant in NYC.  Jace convinced Michael that he didn’t have to wait to buy an engagement ring before asking him to be his spouse, and Michael proposed on the spot.  Jace said ‘yes,’ announced to the whole restaurant that they just got engaged, and then the couple split a delicious bottle of wine!

Karen & Ted’s City Hall Wedding

Well, this is a first: I got to serve as a witness at a City Hall wedding!  I had the pleasure of photographing Karen & Ted, who finally got married at City Hall after many long distance years together.  Their wedding was lovely, but unfortunately, due to travel entanglements the friend who was supposed to visit with them as their wedding witness could not attend.  So I stepped in and did double duty both clicking away and signing my name on the dotted line.  Seriously, this was one of my most fun moments as a wedding photographer.  Since it was just us three, we decided to go to the Brooklyn Bridge afterwards to take a few shots.  Enjoy the photos!

Chris & Lisa: A City Hall Wedding

Bride and groom portraits by NYC City Hall wedding photographer, Kelly Williams

The whole family came together to celebrate the recent wedding of Chris and Lisa at City Hall.  The wait wasn’t too long, and the couple said their ‘I do’s’ surrounded by love.  As the photos indicate, this is a fun couple who loves to laugh.  Most importantly, they were ready to get on to the party, so we kept the photos afterwards to a minimum by going just to the little wedding garden and to the main City Hall building.  Enjoy the pics.

Liz & Jim: A NYC City Hall Wedding

Bride and groom portrait after a NYC City Hall wedding, by Kelly Williams
I just photographed the NYC City Hall wedding Liz and Jim — a great couple who, like most New Yorkers, met and fell in love online.  Their reception was held at the Capital Grille, located in the Chrysler Building.  This is a very old school place, with waiters who have made a career out of excellent service.  The food was outstanding.  The most unique part of the reception was Liz’s DIY wine bottle centerpieces, the inspiration of which she found on the Martha Stewart Weddings blog.

From a ski trip to Okemo Mountain in Vermont to several trips to Tampa, Florida, their courtship involved a host of adventures.  All of these fun trips then became the labels on the wine bottles, personalized with a description of the place why it meant so much to Liz and Jim.  These bottles served as a great way for guests to find their seats versus the old standby of boring table numbers.  To add another personal touch, the pair had additional wine bottles on the table that presented guests with a special drink menu of customized cocktails– fancy a ‘Liztini’ or a ‘Jimlet’?  The couple’s favorite wine—Root : 1, which they’ve has been present at all momentous occasions throughout their relationship—was the wine of choice for the reception centerpieces.  Enjoy the pics!
