I am so happy to bring you the wedding of Colleen and Sean! While they live in Seattle, New York City is near and dear to their hearts. They had their ceremony on a lovely day in the back garden of the Merchant’s House Museum. If you haven’t checked out the Museum located in the middle of NoHo, you definitely should, especially if you are having a small wedding. The venue is beautiful both inside and out, complete with exquisite details from the 1800s throughout the house. And the backyard makes you and your guests feel like you have been transported outside of the chaos of the city.
I had the honor of photographing the Merchants House Museum wedding of Catherine and Wes recently, and it was a lovely event. The day started out with Catherine getting ready at the Standard Hotel in Coopers Square. She began the evening in a cocktail dress for the pre-ceremony shindig, and then came back to the hotel to change into her wedding dress for the ceremony.
Both the ceremony and the cocktail hour were held at the Merchants House Museum. This is a great venue, especially if you’d like a taste of old world charm in the middle of downtown Manhattan. Keep in mind a few things: first, no flash is allowed, so it’s a particularly dark venue, photography-wise. Also, no furniture can be moved, so what you see is what you get. Second, the main room is very small, so it’s only available for wedding parties of 60 or less (it may be an even smaller number than this). The outside garden is great for cocktails (or for a ceremony if you wish), and the staff is wonderful.
We then moved on to Congee Village on the Bowery for a traditional Chinese, multi-course feast (check out the small birds that were served along with the fruit and lobster salad!). During the meal, a traditional tea ceremony was performed whereby family members are shown respect by the new couple by being offered cups of tea, and the family members in turn offer gifts of gold jewelry and money to the couple. It was chaotic and full of love, and a great evening. The dinner was capped off by some scrumptious cupcakes by Baked in such flavors as green tea and passion fruit. Yum!
